How Live Out Loud Came To Be
In a magazine article in MetroSource called “The Gun in the Closet,” Emily Drabinski wrote about young gay men who took their lives by their own hands because of hostile school environments, isolation, ostracism and fear.

Thanks to concerned organizations working toward safer schools, there are powerful efforts being made to educate and prevent homophobia. But there are still many schools not yet reached by educational efforts, and even in the most progressive schools many LGBT youth feel isolated.

The article was a call to action to implement an ongoing program that would create a safe space for LGBT youth to learn about powerful and passionate people who are leading extraordinary lives. LIVE OUT LOUD began providing its programming in the spring of 2001.
